Auston Matthews and William Nylander face their next tests at the Olympics as both teams push forward after the preliminary rounds.

William Nylander was held pointless against Slovakia in a 5-3 win for Sweden, as Elias Pettersson led with two goals and Lucas Raymond produced a goal and two assists.
Nylander, despite not showing up on the score sheet, lead the way in terms of chances for the Swedish team, an offensive leader for the Swedes.
For the United States, Denmark came out to a surprise 1-0 lead early after a goal from Nick Olesen put the Danes on the board in the first 1:40 of the game.
Three consecutive goals in the second period wasn't enough to quiet down the Danish teams who continued to push the Americans to 4-3 at the end of the second.
Matthews assisted on a goal for Jake Guentzel in the third to put the USA up by two, giving America a tough win against a competitive Denmark attack. Jack Hughes closed the game out for a 6-3 win.
With wins for both Sweden and the United States, the path forward gets clear for both teams in the battle for gold, although there's still a wait ahead with one more day of grou play.

What comes now for the United States, Sweden?

The United States moves up to second in the tournament with the win against Denmark, with a goal differental of seven, behind Canada and ahead of Slovakia.
Sweden sits seventh, and will wait to see how Germany and Czechia's games play out in deciding how they will fare in the knockout round.
Germany, who plays the United States, could leapfrog Sweden with a win by two or more goals. Czechia, who plays Switzerland, can jump up to seventh with a win of five or more goals.
Right now, the United States and Sweden are on pace to meet one another in the semifinals, with Sweden underperforming but the USA having shown the ability to let underdogs give them a scare.
Auston Matthews and William Nylander could be set for a major matchup between the two Leafs stars in Milan though only time will well.
