NHL Organization Starts Making Massive Equipment Change After Last Night's Tragedy
In recent days a shocking and unfortunate event has led to a call for major change in protective equipment in hockey. Today one team decided to implement new equipment as a result of the tragedy.
Hockey Tragedy Shocks The World
Early this morning it was announced that former NHLer Adam Johnson had passed away. A day earlier Johnson had his neck cut by a skate. Since then the whole hockey world has been mourning his passing.
The National Hockey League family mourns the passing of former Pittsburgh Penguin Adam Johnson. Our prayers and deepest condolences go to his family, friends and teammates.
It has also made many fans and people, in general, realize the unnecessary risks that are taken in professional hockey. Several pieces of protective equipment are disregarded as players get older or move up levels. Now one team is making a change to this trend.
Bruins Players Make Massive Equipment Changes
Today the Providence Bruins played their first game since Johnson's passing. During the game, several players were seen wearing neck guards.
A number of @AHLBruins played wearing neck guards on Sunday.
This comes after former NHL player Adam Johnson died following a freak accident in an EIHL game
This is the first we have seen at the NHL or AHL level of teams wearing neck guards. The NHL and NHLPA are also reportedly discussing adding additional protective gear such as neck and wrist guards.
In the NHL last season Evander Kane suffered a scary injury to his wrist due to a skate. These injuries are unnecessary and more preventable with equipment that already exists. Let's see how long it takes the NHL to get these changes implemented.
