Preseason hockey serves two purposes. First, warming full-time NHLers up for the season. Secondly, it is a place for minor leaguers to impress and earn their shot at the big leagues. For the second thing to happen, the players must get noticed by their teams.
The most common way for these players to get noticed is to drop the gloves and prove they can provide the grit their teams need. Jakub Lauko and Louie Belpedio looked to prove themselves as they went blow for blow in a crazy fight.
In the end, it seems like Belpedio got the upper hand knocking Lauko down to a knee but it seems like the fight could've gone on for several more blows if the refs had not intervened.
Lauko is a 23-year-old center who was originally a 3rd round pick of the Bruins in 2018. He got his first taste of NHL action with the Bruins last year posting seven points in 23 games where he tacked on an additional 3 games in the playoffs where he had one assist.
Belpedio on the other hand is a 27-year-old defenseman who has yet to find true NHL footing playing in only 4 games in three different seasons, all with the Wild. If the Flyers sustain an injury on the blue line, there is a solid chance Belpedio gets his first extended stint in the NHL.
