One of the Blackhawks' most important players in franchise history has officially announced his retirement from hockey.
Hjalmarsson Retires From Hockey
Niklas Hjalmarsson has officially retired from hockey at 36 years old. He previously retired in 2021 but came out of retirement to captain HV71 of the Swedish SHL.
Hjalmarsson was always a shutdown defensive defenseman and played his role quite well playing on the Blackhawks' top pairing with Duncan Keith for their three Stanley Cups.
He played 821 games in his 14-year career registering 172 points along the way. He was a key part of the Blackhawks' 2010, 2013, and 2015 cup runs and helped them build a dynasty.
He left the Blackhawks in 2017 to play for the Coyotes where he spent four seasons with. In 2021 he retired for the first time and did not play. However, he came out of retirement and played 17 more games in the SHL before finally deciding to call it a career.
