Over his 11 seasons in the NHL, Johnny Gaudreau earned a reputation for being one of the most talented and skilled players in the league, but with his infectious personality on and off the ice, he became beloved by teammates and opponents alike.
Throughout that time, Johnny Hockey was honoured in many ways, being an All-Star and helping the Flames to the playoffs many times, but in his career, he won just one award; the Lady Byng way back in 2016/17.
Now, petitions have continued to circulate on social media for the league to name the trophy after Gaudreau, with 2024/25 being the 100 year anniversary of the award.
One petition has been shared on social media, and while it has thus far only received 135 votes, it's certainly one that could gain steam, with this being the perfect way to honour Gaudreau.
The Lady Byng Trophy is given to the "player adjudged to have exhibited the best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability", and while there are plenty of players that do that, none more so than Gaudreau during his time with Calgary and Columbus. It's unclear at this point whether or not the league is considering the move, but given the outpouring of love given to Gaudreau by fans, former teammates and executives around the league, they will likely do something, and this would be a well deserved move for No. 13.
