The Minnesota Wild just made one of the biggest gambles you can make in the NHL and it immediately paid off.

Wild Pull Their Goalie In Overtime And Score Game-Winning Goal

The Wild were in a tied game with the Nashville Predators as the game went into overtime. With the team desperate for every point they can get, head coach John Hynes made a bold move. He elected to pull the goalie after his team had puck possession, giving them a 4-3 skater advantage. Luckily for Hynes and the Wild, the move worked as Matt Boldy scored the winning goal.

Wild Head Coach Instantly Rewarded For Risky Move In Overtime

Normally, both teams receive at least one point when a game goes into overtime. However, there is a rule that says if you pull the goalie and the other team scores an empty netter, the losing team does not get a point at all. As such, the team would not have gotten any points had they lost this game in overtime.

Minnesota, needing 2 points, pulled the goalie in OT. If the Predators had scored, the Wild would have got 0 points. What a gamble

If the Preds had've scored on the empty net, Minnesota wouldn't have even gotten the loser point 😳. If you pull the goalie in OT and get scored on, you get 0 points

Talk about a gutsy move from John Hynes

This move has become a trend in the KHL recently with some teams making it a regular part of their strategy. Now that it has been proven to work in the NHL, other teams could take notice.
