The Montreal Canadiens, like most Canadian markets have a tough media presence, but now, one journalist has come to the defense of Cole Caufield.
Hockey players are more than entitled to spend their time way from the ice however they please (legally, of course), but in recent times, criticism has emerged surrounding Cole Caufield's behaviour off the ice.
This is not unexpected given how intense the media can be in Canadian markets, but recently, a respected journalist in Reneaud Lavoie has come to the defense of the young forward.
«I apologize for the term, and I'll avoid swearing, but it's bullshit, it's complete bullshit.»
«Cole Caufield, to me, is a young hockey player who behaves like a professional. I've never seen Cole Caufield and thought he had a tough night the day before.»
«Even yesterday, Cole Caufield didn't participate in the morning practice, but he was (as usual) at the edge of the ice, with a smile, cheering on his teammates, attentive to what's happening on the ice, and with an exemplary attitude.»
«Come on! This witch hunt... Are you okay? The life of hockey players today, in 2024, is a lot more boring than it was 15-20 years ago.» - Renaud Lavoie
It's safe to say that with the emergence of social media and the 24/7 news cycle, players can't unwind in a way they used too, but as Lavoie points out, Caufield is still a constant presence at practice and is noted by many as being a fantastic teammate. Players are certainly entitled to spend their time away from the ice however they like, and as long as Caufield's talents as both a player and a teammate continue positively in the eyes of his teammates and his manager, this shouldn't be an issue at all.
