In Montreal, the team is having the best preseason since the Carey Price era. They won their first two games against the Philadelphia Flyers and the New Jersey Devils 5-0 and 3-0.
There is a lot to be excited about the Canadiens this season, but the standout player who fans can't wait to see in Montreal this season is Lane Hutson.
Nothing indicates that he'll make the team this year, but Hutson brings exactly what the team needs. In one preseason game, he showed that he can bring his creativity and insane skills to an NHL ice. However, he could still be sent down to the AHL if management feels that it'll help his development.
Hutson will be in uniform tonight in Toronto, alongside Justin Barron on the Habs' top pair. Arber Xhekaj, Adam Engstrom, Jayden Struble, and David Reinbacher complete the defensive unit. As you can see, veterans David Savard and Mike Matheson won't play tonight and will likely compete on Saturday night, when the Habs receive the Leafs at the Bell Center.
In the forward group, Christian Dvorak will lead the team's first line, with Alex Newhook and Emil Heineman. The biggest surprise of the camp, Oliver Kapanen, will center the second trio with Joshua Roy and Joel Armia on his wings. The bottom-six consists of Riley Kidney, Owen Beck, and Alex Barre-Boulet on the third line, completed by Luke Tuch, Brandon Gignac, and Michael Pezzetta on the fourth.
From Eric Engels:
It should be an interesting matchup tonight. Despite not sending out their best players on the ice tonight, the Canadiens decided to give a change to players who want to make the most of that opportunity. It won't be an easy task for the Habs, as the Leafs decided to send out the big guns without Auston Matthews (who left the Leafs practice yesterday with an upper-body injury). We can't wait to see how the young Habs players will perform in that tough challenge.
