In a very scary incident on Friday, the New York Islanders' Mike Reilly needed to be stretchered off after a hit from the Buffalo Sabres' Jordan Greenway.

During the second period of the game between the Buffalo Sabres and the New York Islanders, after a scramble in front of the net, New York's Mike Reilly took a heavy hit against the board from Jordan Greenway and landed hard on his head as he came crashing down to the ice.

It was a frightening scene to say the least, and it's just another brutal negative in the New York Islanders' season. Already without star player Mathew Barzal, this is another tragic incident that could seriously affect Reilly going forward. The risk with concussions and brain injuries are both severe and sadly more and more common as we learn more about the science behind it.

What makes it even sadder is that the hit had no ill intent or maliciousness behind it, and it seemed like just a normal check where Reilly got pushed and essentially flipped up against the boards and came crashing down. Greenway didn't lay an elbow into his head, and for a seemingly innocent play it had massive consequences. It was genuinely a freak accident which led to Reilly's injury.

Reilly has been held pointless this season so far for the struggling Islanders, and for his career he has been known as a gritty, bottom-line forward who can occasionally chip in on offense. The 10-year NHL veteran has 18 goals and 104 assists for his career spent with Boston, Montreal, Minnesota, Ottawa, Florida, and New York.

Greenway is in his third season with the Sabres, and for his career has 54 goals and 101 assists while playing with Buffalo and Minnesota where he was actually a teammate of Reilly for one season in 2017-18.

We will update you with more information as it is made available to us. Stay tuned!
