The Islanders replaced head coach Lane Lambert with NHL goalie legend and Hall of Famer Patrick Roy yesterday. Today, the new head coach made his first appearance with the islanders. In it, we got a chance to see a brand new look for the coach as he was missing his trademark beard.
Roy has seldom been seen without a beard going back to his coaching days with the Avalanche. He was seen as recently as last season sporting a full playoff beard as he lead his Quebec Remparts of the QMJHL to a Memorial Cup championship.
The new head coach revealed today that the new look was not entirely his idea. He noted that he begrudgingly agreed to shave as Lamoriello seemingly wanted to make no exceptions for his team. Not even for Roy, who is one of the most respected NHL players of all time.
The Islanders are currently 6th place in the Metro division with a 19-15-11 record. They are technically just three points back of a playoff spot, but with the number of teams ahead of them, they have serious work ahead of them if they want to make the playoffs this season. Hopefully Roy can turn things around quickly as the team will need to finish strong in the stretch run.
