Flyers draft pick Matvei Michkov on his way to the NHL to compete for the Calder
Today reports are confirming that Matvei Michkov is currently in the process of signing with the Philadelphia Flyers which means he will join a stacked Calder Trophy race in 2024-25.
Matvei Michkov was selected 7th overall in the 2023 NHL Draft. Originally expected to be a top 3 selection his stock dropped after fears of him staying in Russia too long. The Flyers were not concerned about this timeline and were willing to wait three years according to GM Danny Briere
It is what it is. We know he has got a contract for three more seasons. But for us we just felt after watching him play and after meeting him, we just felt it's a talent that we cannot pass up and if we have to wait, we'll wait
Today it was confirmed that the Philadelphia Flyers would not need to wait the 3 full years. Instead, after one year in the KHL after being drafted Matvei Michkov is expected to sign with the Philadelphia Flyers.
I'm told that it looks like Matvei Michkov is leaving SKA and will be joining the Philadelphia Flyers.
A source confirms that the Flyers first round draft pick Matvei Michkov has been released by his team in Russia
It looks like their first round draft pick will be coming to play for the Flyers this year. He will be the Flyers most exciting player
With his addition to the 2024-25 NHL class of rookies the Calder Trophy race now becomes even more stacked that it was thought to be.
Calder Memorial Trophy race could be an all-time list in 2024-25
Heading into the 2024-25 NHL season the list of favorites to win the Calder Memorial Trophy will be as wide open as ever. The list will include names like presumptive 2024 first overall selection Macklin Celebrini, his teammate Will Smith, former Flyers prospect Cutter Gauthier, and of course Matvei Michkov as well as many more.
Top candidates in next years Calder race:
Matvei Michkov
Macklin Celebrini
Will Smith
Cutter Gauthier
Lane Hutson
Logan Stankoven
Dustin Wolf
This seasons race was Bedards to lose but next year it could be an all timer. Each of these players will go through their ups and downs as a rookie but the true determination will likely be made by who is most consistent. Whether that be consistent through playing time, performance, or both. All of these players have the opportunity to be franchise-changing talents whichever player succeeds at that will likely come home with the award.
As the season begins it will be fascinating to see which of these rookies takes the league by storm and joins names like Connor Bedard, Cale Makar, and Auston Matthews as Calder Memorial Trophy winners.
