In another terrible injury to the St. Louis Blues, defenseman Phillip Broberg crashed into the boards and landed awkwardly, needing help off the ice.

It was a rematch that both the St. Louis Blues and Toronto Maple Leafs were looking forward to. After a tribute video for Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube, who led the Blues to their only Stanley Cup, the game seemed to be going as normal as both teams were fighting hard.

In what seemed like an innocent play, St. Louis defenseman Phillip Broberg ended up trying to catch the Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner and ended up falling awkwardly into the boards as his right knee buckled as he fell:

It was a gruesome end to an innocuous play, leading to Broberg to leave the game. It's a seriously unfortunate turn of events for the St. Louis Blues, who are already without Nick Leddy and Torey Krug, and the loss of Broberg would cripple the Blues defense. St. Louis seemed to be motivated by the injury to their defenseman, as they've piled on the goals so far into the game, leading 3-1 in the second period. St. Louis looks more motivated since Broberg left, and Colton Parayko has decided to shoulder the load for the team, scoring two of St. Louis' three goals.

If Broberg is out for any extended time, St. Louis may need to look to the trade market to fill the holes on their blueline though it may be hard to find someone with the skillset to replace Broberg without paying a fortune for it. St. Louis also has Scott Harrington on their AHL team, and he could provide a quick internal stop-gap option. Broberg ended up signing with the Blues after Edmonton declined to match the Blues' offer sheet for the former 8th overall pick.

So far this season, Broberg has been a bright spot for the Blues, scoring 9 points in 11 games, and being a prospective elite offensive defenseman once he's given enough time on the ice. It's a huge loss to the Blues' offense just as much as their defense, as he is tied for the lead in point on St. Louis with star forward Jordan Kyrou.

We will update you with any updates regarding the injury status of Phillip Broberg as more information becomes available.
