With Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs working to get an extension for the superstar player the belief is Matthews will become the highest paid player in the NHL.
Other players in the league that are looking for extensions like Elias Pettersson have been keeping an eye on this situation before they sign a new contract.
With players like Pettersson waiting to see what they are worth, this may become the new normal for contract extensions.
Pettersson Vs Matthews
Many fans would say that Matthews is miles better than Pettersson but that might not be the case anymore.
Pettersson collected his first 100 point season this past season on a struggling Vancouver Canucks team. Pettersson has been hovering near and around a point-per-game pace on a mediocore Canucks team ever since he came into the league.
However this past season Pettersson had a better defensive season than Matthews. Although Matthews is the better goal scorer having a 60 goal season under his belt as well as never scoring under 30 goals in his career.
