There was apparently a move Kyle Dubas made trying to overstep Brendan Shanahan that directly lead to his firing.

Friedman Reveals Tension Between Dubas and Shanahan Leading to Dubas' Dismissal

It has been revealed that Kyle Dubas and Brendan Shanahan had a rocky relationship that involved Shanahan rejecting trades that Dubas was going to pull off.

In the contract negotiations between Shanahan and Dubas, it was revealed that Dubas wanted more direct communication with Leafs ownership, cutting out the middle man, Brendan Shanahan.

On the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman revealed the following:

Friedman:
'There was a feeling from Dubas that the current reporting structure didn't work.
It goes Dubas, Shanahan, Board thinks about it Back to Shanahan and it goes back to Dubas.
Initially what I heard is that Dubas tried to cut Shanahan out. He wanted to report directly''

'Dubas thought they could not get things done quick enough.
He believed that the way the reporting works it wasn't going to get done.
He was worried things were going to get out.
He was worried the decisions could not be made quick enough.
He proposed that''

That particular request was not well received

This is huge news because Dubas, in an effort to help the ship sail smoother, tried to eliminate Shanahan from the process and he was not a fan of this. This could eat into what Shanahan said about Dubas not being committed to the team.

Maybe, it was Dubas not being committed to Shanahan and he was plenty committed to the team. Shanahan's ego is notoriously large and fragile which means that it is not out of the realm of possibility he fired Dubas over this move.
