Leafs Goalie Joseph Woll's demeanor has earned him praise from teammate Max Domi, who compared Woll to another former Domi teammate, Canadiens Goaltender Carey Price. Domi, who played alongside Price in 2 seasons with the Montreal Canadiens, credited Woll's attitude, as well as his fundamentals as similar to Price's game.
In response, Woll said he was honored to be compared to Price, who he says he modeled his game after, and took as an inspiration in net.
Woll has become a reliable backup option for the Leafs, stemming from a strong 2023 playoffs for Toronto that led to Woll's emergence in net, being named the team's backup with Matt Murray out on LTIR, although Woll appears to have earned the job even without Murray's absence.
With Ilya Samsonov having mixed results early, Woll has shown exceptional poise between the pipes, with a 1.69GAA and a .947SV% in 2 Games this season. A small sample size, but stronger than Samsonov, who enters another contract year after a $3.5M arbitration signing.
Of course, Domi isn't comparing Woll to Price in terms of actual talent, but in terms of how the 2 process the game on the ice. Price, 23rd all-time in wins with 361, is a likely future HHOF netminder, as well as an Olympic Gold Medalist and one of the best Goalies of his generation. Domi's compliments are a far cry from proclaiming Woll as the next great Goalie in the league, but show he's a hard worker who's already taken on adversity and succeeded in the NHL, and in any way, Joseph Woll has taken the comparison as nothing more than a honor, but still has the mentality to take his game further.
