Kyle Dubas Leaks Secret Maple Leafs Information in Recent Presser
Erik Karlsson was the talk of the offseason, as it was well-known that the defenseman would be on the trading block through the summer months. The Karlsson sweepstakes were recently won by Kyle Dubas and the Pittsburgh Penguins in a 3-way deal with the Sharks and Canadiens.
Dubas' New Roster
Dubas was very open with the press that he intends on whipping the roster into shape, and that there is a lot of work to be done on that front. He touted Karlssons' ability to move the puck and breakout of the defensive zone as a supplement to the team's aging but top-tier roster.
"There's a lot of work to be done. The team missed the playoffs last year. There's no dancing around it. We tried to supplement as best we can, and I know that there'll be people that doubt the group. We have to go out and prove it starting the first day of training camp."
Lengthy Process
What some people are focussing on, however, is not Dubas supplementing the roster, but the length of time it took Dubas to secure Karlsson.
In the interview, he notes that it was a lengthy process that goes back to his time in Toronto.
"It was a fairly lengthy process that goes back to my previous employment," Dubas admitted.
While Karlsson is obviously a skilled player that any organization would be lucky to have, it is clearly a slip-up that Dubas gave this information on the Leafs' roster strategy. Such information gives other teams some inside information on the Leafs' desire to add another skilled defenseman.
All this said new GM Brad Treliving has been pretty clear that his strategy going forward will look a little different than the Leafs of the past.
