The Toronto Maple Leafs made a big addition to their defensive group by signing John Klingberg. This has been able to take some of the offensive pressure off of fellow defenseman Morgan Rielly. Even with this massive signing, many believe the Maple Leafs are still missing a key defensive element.
The Maple Leafs spent significant assets to sign forwards who would bring toughness and physicality to the team. The same cannot be said about the defense though. Reports had confirmed that the Maple Leafs tried and failed to sign notoriously physical defenseman Radko Gudas before he went to Anaheim.
Now the Maple Leafs have a chance to rectify this mistake by adding a former Maple Leaf for essentially nothing.
Today the last round of waivers went into effect. One former Maple Leaf was a surprise addition to the waiver list. The Tampa Bay Lightning placed defenseman Zach Bogosian on waivers. Bogosian played with the Maple Leafs in 2020-21 playing 45 games.
Now Bogosian is 33 and not the player he used to be. However, he is still a physical presence who is not afraid to lay his body on the line for his team. Since he was placed on waivers fans and media have linked Bogosian back to Toronto.
The Maple Leafs could add Bogosian for essentially nothing. Play him to start the season and see how he does. If he succeeds Toronto gets some of that physical play and more veteran presence on defense. If he struggles they can always just place him back on waivers and go from there.
