Michael Bunting has been a key part of the Leafs' top six for a couple of seasons now. In 161 games for the Leafs, Bunting has accrued 46 goals and 112 points.
Now Bunting is a free agent and all signs point to him leaving the Leafs for more money elsewhere but a new contract projection could show the Leafs being able to retain Bunting.
In an article from Daily Faceoff using contract projections from AFP Analytics, they revealed the price for a Michael Bunting contract.
The revealed contract projection was a 5-year contract with an Average Annual Value of $5.25 million per year.
This is huge news for the Leafs because, with about $15 million in cap space, they could reasonably resign Bunting if they decided that was the way to go.
They also could go a different way and sign a different player like Tyler Bertuzzi or Alex Killorn which adds a lot more size and grit to their top six.
With a rather weak UFA class, the Leafs could certainly capitalize on their cap space and build a team that can compete for a cup next year.
