On the 32 Thoughts podcast hosted by NHL insiders Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman, some huge news regarding Auston Matthews' next contract was unveiled.
When the topic of Matthews' contract was brought up, Friedman said this:
This is huge news for any Maple Leafs fan because this means that Matthews will likely get a raise to at least $12.6 million AAV (Average Annual Value).
Nathan Mackinnon currently has the largest contract AAV in the NHL with an AAV of $12.6 million and with Matthews likely to eclipse that, he could enter the $13 million territory.
Matthews was incredibly stingy during his original contract discussions with the Leafs back in 2019 where he gave the Leafs none of his UFA years which means Matthews could potentially leave after next season.
If he were to stay in Toronto, his contract will likely be in the $13 million to $14 million range and if he walks in free agency, he could sign a contract worth over $15 million per year.
Whatever happens next, Matthews will likely be the highest-paid player in the NHL which is something he can rest easy knowing.
