Through 22 games this season, William Nylander leads the Leafs in points with 29, assists with 17, and is second in goals with 12. To say he has been the Leafs' most consistent player would be an understatement.
He has only had three games this season where he did not score a point; it was the three games after the Global Series in Sweden. Since then, he has started a new point streak and has two assists in his past two games.
While his play may be strong, his contract status is not. He is in the final year of his contract and could very well walk from Toronto if he is not paid what he deems a fair amount. This has led to many rumors about a potential trade.
Eklund of HockeyBuzz.com just revealed some major news regarding the Nylander trade discussions:
The Kings and Islanders would certainly both be great fits for Nylander. The Kings already are producing at an elite level and the addition of Nylander could put them over the top as Cup favorites.
The Islanders are also a solid fit as they lack depth down the wing. If Nylander can find chemistry with the Islanders' Mat Barzal, the two could emerge as one of the most dominant duos in hockey.
The Leafs have a few months before the trade deadline but if they feel like they will not be able to resign Nylander, he may be moved out to a team willing to pay him soon.
