The dismissal of Dubas was not a surprise, more so that it was believed Shanahan, who brought Dubas into the organization as an unproven, but analytically savvy wizkid, was let go after 5 years at the helm of one of Hockey's most storied franchises, having helped to lead the Leafs to some of their best seasons in their history.
It will be big shoes to fill, and Shanahan is making sure to have the best person possible to take over the role of Dubas, who helped revitalize Toronto, except this time, it's not expected that another inexperienced option isn't on the cards for the Leafs.
One popular name appearing in the Leafs GM search is outgoing Flames General Manager Brad Treliving. The 53-year-old having been the Flames GM since 2014.
According to Flames reporter Eric Francis, Calgary, who continue to hold control contract rights to Treliving until June 30, have allowed teams, including Toronto, to speak to him about openings.
As reported as well by The Athletic's James Mirtle, Shanahan is expected to consult with Gary Bettman for guidance regarding the GM search. It isn't uncommon for teams to do so, but it also demonstrates that Shanahan plays to put the upmost care into finding the person who continues the winning tradition that Shanahan brought to the team along with Kyle Dubas.
While Shanahan continues to be quiet on their next hire, having led the bombshell move take up the noise, it's expected that Toronto wants someone experience, who can take what Dubas built and bring those pieces into a championship winner.
