Kane is coming off a relatively down year from his past performances, in which he was still able to put up 21 goals and 57 points. This, coupled with his current health status, might make him susceptible to a one-year deal.
If the Leafs are able to close him for around a million for 1 year, Kane brings cup experience, goal-scoring, and playoff performances to Toronto. He likely still has 4-5 years left in his career, so a 1-year deal could be workable, and would give Kane an opportunity to show he still has it in hopes of signing a larger deal in 2024 when the cap is raised.
The Leafs have struggled in goal for the past few years. With Murray on long-term injury, the season will be placed in the hands of Ilya Samsonov and Joseph Woll. The young goalie duo is unlikely to be able to handle a full 82-game spread, and an injury to one of them would be disastrous for the Leafs.
Elliot fills this gap in the Leafs' roster, giving them important goalie depth. Though he didn't have a stellar performance last year, he is reliable and that is something the Leafs could use with the inexperienced current duo.
Similar to Elliot, Halak is a crucial free agent for the Leafs to have their eyes on. He is a proven reliable backup goaltender, playing on a number of different franchises.
Near the end of his career, Halak could easily fit as the Leafs' second goalie behind Samsonov. If he is looking to go to a cup contender, the Leafs might be a perfect fit.
