As of now when the Toronto Maple Leafs head into the 2024 offseason they will be equipped with $40,000,000 in cap space. This is due to the fact that many players are on expiring deals. Recent signings like Tyler Bertuzzi, Max Domi, and John Klingberg are all on one-year deals. Two members of the core four are also expiring in Auston Matthews and William Nylander.
While the Leafs do likely have the two best players of the 2024 free agent class on their roster there are still several other high-level players that could be on the market.
Ontario native Steven Stamkos is the biggest name likely to be available. The Leafs were interested in Stamkos in his last run-up to free agency and could be again. Former second-overall pick Sam Reinhart will also be one of the top options available. Since his move to Floria Reinhart has flourished as one of the best top six forwards in the league. Other names like Tyler Toffoli and Mark Scheifele will be available as well.
Of course, we are still a full NHL season away from any of these players potentially hitting the open market. While it is more likely that Matthews and Nylander are back and this core continues to look to improve it is always fun to look down the road at the what if scenarios.
