After getting a one-year contract extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs last offseason, Ilya Samsonov has failed to live up to the contract and has been downright bad for the Leafs. Through 15 games played this year, Samsonov has recorded an .862 sv% and a 3.94 GAA while winning only 5 of the 15 games he started.
This performance prompted GM Brad Treliving to send him down to the AHL in an effort to help him find a fresh start and regain his confidence.
With Samsonov going down, it is only logical that another goaltender would be coming up as starter Joseph Woll is still recovering from an injury. We now know who Samsonov's temporary replacement will be.
Following the Leafs placing Samsonov on waivers, the Toronto Marlies called goaltender Luke Cavallin up from the Newfoundland Growlers of the ECHL. This means that they are preparing to lose one of their goaltenders and it is likely to be Dennis Hildeby.
Fans were quick to point out how likely it is for Hildeby to be called up to the NHL.
It should be noted that it is not a guarantee that Hildeby is the goaltender called up and the Leafs could opt for Keith Petruzelli but given how Hildeby has outperformed him thus far, he is likely to get the call.
Hildeby has a 2.20 GAA and a .919 SV% in 15 games this season with the Marlies and is proving to be a potential long-term fix for the Leafs in net.
We will now wait and see if Samsonov gets claimed off waivers as that changes almost every for the Maple Leafs organization.
