Andrew Mangiapane hits waivers as Maple Leafs monitor low-cost forward options

Andrew Mangiapane has been placed on waivers by the Edmonton Oilers, the team has announced. Along with Mangiapane, defenseman Alec Regula was waived by Edmonton.

Mangiapane, 29, has seven goals and 14 points in 52 games with the Edmonton Oilers this season, on pace for his lowest point total since his rookie season.

Mangiapane is in the first season of a two-year contract signed with the Oilers at $3.6M annually, the Leafs having been a team linked to him in free agency.

Toronto has found themselves back in the mix as a potential destination for Mangiapane as he's emerged as a potential cap dump in trade talks involving Mangiapane and the Leafs.

The price of Andrew Mangiapane as a cap dump has become all the more evident with him being placed on waivers, and he's almost certain to be on the way out.

The challenge for teams such as Toronto is whether or not they'd be willing to take on Mangiapane's $3.6M contract that extends to next season.

For the Leafs, a team that is hoping to bounce back immediately next season from a subpar performance this season, Mangiapane is hard to envision in Toronto's plans.

A team with open space in the league's basement may be tempted to take on Mangiapane as a potential bounce back option, but this may keep Toronto off of Mangiapane.

While he could still be traded, Edmonton has signaled that Mangiapane is someone the team is desperate to move, and with term is a massive question mark to acquire for a potential short-term contender.
