Auston Matthews made a comeback for the Toronto Maple Leafs in Game 7 against the Bruins, but it didn't pan out how they hoped.

The Leafs lost 2-1 overtime, extending their streak of Game 7 losses to six, and 0-4 in deciders against Boston. Matthews had been out since Game 4 due to illness and some mystery injury, but he suited up for this crucial showdown.

After the game, Matthews didn't want to dive into his absence right away.

I'm not gonna get into that tonight. Maybe in the next couple of days."
Instead, he focused on how proud he was of his teammates for stepping up while he was sidelined.

This is as tight as the group as I've been a part of here. And I feel like we say that every year, but I mean, it truly was an incredible group, incredibly tight. And the way we stuck together through the ups and downs of the regular season and postseason, as tight as the group as I've been a part of.

The decision for Matthews to hit the ice wasn't even made until Saturday morning.

Despite the tough loss, Matthews gave props to the Bruins, but he felt they were right there in terms of competitiveness.

They're always a tough opponent. They're a well-put-together team. But I thought we were right there with them. Tonight was a tight game. It's tough, could have gone either way.

Matthews chipped in with one assist during the game, trying to help the Leafs stage a comeback from being down 3-1 in the series. Tough loss, but they gave it their all.
