It was a great sign for the Maple Leafs to have their captain Auston Matthews back on the ice, even if it was just practice. It means he's one step closer to getting back to game action.
Toronto has been doing well without him, going 7-1-0 as they sit atop the Atlantic Division while being led by Mitch Marner; who has taken the offense and ran with it.
But the question remains, is Matthews healthy enough to come back yet?
If you were to ask him and his head coach, they might have a bit of differing opinions.
Matthews was excited to be back and speaking to TSN's Mark Masters, the captain acknowledged it may take a bit to get back into a rhythm he wants to be out there:
That is a massive positive towards Matthews return as well as the hope that whatever ailed him is done with and he can focus on helping the team running at full capacity.
But head coach Craig Berube was a little less optimistic and stressed that his conditioning may not be up to snuff in time:
Berube is one to make sure his players are rested, given how much he tends to work them in games and practices.
Numerous players have had maintenance days including William Nylander, Jake McCabe and Max Domi (twice). The latter was clearly dealing with something as he landed on the IR shortly after his second rest day.
It's not certain if Matthews will play, and while he is the captain of the team, he doesn't make the lineup. If Berube thinks he can win without him (and why wouldn't he?) then he would keep Matthews out one more game.
Q1: What is Auston Matthews' status for the Maple Leafs?
A1: Auston Matthews returned to practice on Tuesday as his official status is unknown, as he hasn't been activated off the IR yet. However, Craig Berube is hesitant to play him just yet, so Toronto will likely hold off until Saturday.
Q2: Will the team win without Auston Matthews?
A2: It's never a certainty if a team will win any given game, however historically the Maple Leafs perform better without Auston Matthews, and this season is no different, winning seven of their last eight games. Matthews is a phenomenal player, so the team steps up in his absence.
In closing, Auston Matthews returning to practice is a great sign towards his return to in-game action. However, Craig Berube is playing it safe with his captain and can't risk him being on the shelf again, but long-term.
