Auston Matthews has been on the shelf for two weeks and there have been so many questions surrounding the potential severity of his injury.
Toronto is preparing to be without their superstar for the foreseeable future, with no definitive timeline for his return.
However, GM Brad Treliving did give some key insight into Matthews' recovery, and it's quite shocking to say the least.
There was also a bit of news involving David Kampf as well, who is also suffering from an injury.
It's a startling revelation considering how Matthews started as simply day-to-day, but has regressed into something potentially serious. It's not often you get a second opinion from a doctor in Europe, and more often than not it's to discuss surgery or some alternative treatments.
Matthews traveled to Munich with Maple Leafs' medical staff member Dr. Noah Forman, and while Treliving was confident it's nothing too serious, it's still puzzling:
That echoes Craig Berube's comments regarding Matthews however saying no setbacks and it's going well doesn't offer fans much relief. It was supposed to be a game or maybe two, and now there's a potential to lose upward of 10 games.
That's a huge loss for the Maple Leafs, and while they've been great so far, it's unlikely they can sustain success without their captain.
It's reminiscent of when Max Pacioretty went to Germany in order to get his Achilles issue sorted out, and while it's unknown if the same doctor is looking at Matthews, it's a worrying sign given how serious Pacioretty's injury was.
Germany is renowned for its doctors and advancements in medicine, and perhaps Matthews is looking for a be-all end-all solution for whatever has been ailing him. There are numerous sports clinics that specialize in all sorts of injuries, and Matthews has the name value to acquire the best in the world.
It's been a slow season for Matthews given he only had five goals before ending up on the shelf. Whether it's because of a nagging injury, or because of a new role that head coach Craig Berube has given him, it was a bit concerning to say the least.
Toronto will head back to Scotiabank Arena on Wednesday without Matthews again as they try to continue their winning ways against the Vegas Golden Knights.
