There was a lot of faith put in the 'Shana-plan' as Maple Leafs President Brendan Shanahan has tried to put together a team that is not only worthy enough to play for the league's most profitable franchise, but one that is built for a Stanley Cup.
While things haven't gone according to plan, Shanahan is confident with how he built his 2024 squad, however has decided to remain mum on a lot of important factors like Auston Matthews' injury as well as the status of Mitch Marner.
Speaking with Gino Reda of TSN's That's Hockey, the Leafs head honcho decided to dodge a very crucial question that has serious ramifications for the future of the team.
When Reda brought up the situation of Mitch Marner, Shanahan did his best to try and avoid the question and give a mediocre response:
Very basic words from the Maple Leafs President as it's understandable he would not want to leak any information especially with the Winter Meetings currently happening however, the lack of transparency is no doubt frustrating for fans.
For what it's worth, Marner. has every bit the right to ask Toronto for a king's ransom as he's arguably been their MVP as opposed to Auston Matthews. If Marner didn't step up in his absence who knows where Toronto would be right now.
In the final year of his deal, Marner is playing like it with 38 points (10G, 28A) and bringing new life to the Maple Leafs during a time where it felt like every game a new player was ended up on the shelf.
While Shanahan decides he would rather be quiet for the sake of business, fans can only hope that Marner continues his play so that it leads to a long and deep playoff run which ends with a Cup, and Marner being a Leaf for life.
