Connor McDavid should have to play by the rules like everyone else, and Leafs fans are outraged that he was able to get away with shooting John Tavares' stick away.

The Toronto Maple Leafs were just about a minute away from securing a 3-2 win over the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday night when Leon Draisaitl played temporary hero, scoring the game-tying goal in the last minute.

However, the play could and should have gone a lot differently. Towards the beginning of the clip, Oilers superstar Connor McDavid ended up literally shooting John Tavares' dropped stick about six feet across the ice.

It was a brazen move that should have resulted in a penalty, but even though the NHL officials tend to stretch the rules at times; this seemed egregious.

Even more surprisingly, McDavid got away with not one but FOUR penalties on the play in a striking display of favoritism.

Toronto especially is on the end of some pretty rough calls and got themselves a penalty for the same thing last week even though it was accidental. Not to mention this atrocity during the playoffs in 2022-23.

It's also got several Maple Leafs fans up in arms about the whole situation, believing that not only does the league have some kind of vendetta against the club, but that McDavid is allowed to do what he wants as the league's golden boy.

It's very reminiscent of a long past, but not forgotten piece of Maple Leafs history when Wayne Gretzky ended up high-sticking Doug Gilmour and got away with it, sealing Toronto's fate and changing the tide of their playoff series. It's a trend that seems to be getting more and more like there's a gameplan involved and Toronto is a target of some bizarre contempt.

The NHL needs to explain themselves and give a reason as to why they allowed McDavid to get away with it, but others can't, and it's not like they haven't done so with other situations including with the Oilers' own Corey Perry.

It's another sign of a broken league that is more concerned about their revenue than they are doing the right thing. Take some accountability NHL, just one time.
