Berube says McCabe will be out for tonight's game against the New Jersey Devils.
This is McCabe fifth missed game since suffering an upper-body injury against the Tampa Bay Lightning November 30th.
McCabe was spotted skating in practice, a potential sign of a possible return in the short-term.
It has also been confirmed that Max Domi will be a game-time decision against the Devils tonight.
Domi has been out for nearly a month with a lower-body injury and like McCabe, is skating with the team.
Domi has 6 points in 19 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. Domi skated with the second line at practice alongside John Tavares and William Nylander.
It's unclear who will cone out of the lineup in place of Domi if he is to play tonight, but the most likely options are Alexander Nylander and Nikita Grebenkin, both of whom are pointless this season. Grebenkin seems to be the most likely candidate, given his recent scratching.
McCabe on the other hand seems to not have much certainty on his timetable. Brendan Shanahan and Brad Treliving have been intentionally tight-lipped on the injury status of their players, making sure not to say too much, but it's a question over just how serious McCabe injury is.
The fact he is practicing is a positive, but a question about why he's missed so much time when the initial indication from Craig Berube was that McCabe likely wouldn't need to miss any time. In the time between then to now, circumstances have clearly changed.
McCabe, 31, has 5 points in 23 games for the Toronto Maple Leafs this season.
The Toronto Maple Leafs face former head coach Sheldon Keefe and the New Jersey Devils tonight at 7:00pm local time, with a confirmation likely by then on Domi's status.
