This afternoon a new report from Flames writer Eric Francis has revealed the biggest reason that the Flames and Maple Leafs trade talks could fall through. According to the reporter, a perceived strength of having their former GM Brad Treliving in Toronto could now be a weakness.
This comes from a reporter who knows the Flames organization quite well. The presence of Treliving in the negotiations isn't just a potential problem for Calgary's ownership but could scare off new GM Craig Conroy from making a deal as well.
Francis continues talking about reasons why the situation could fall apart. He mentions that new GM Craig Conroy's mentor was Brad Treliving. Francis seems to believe that Conroy is afraid that Treliving's mentorship could leave Conroy open to exploitation by his mentor.
While dealing with a former member of your organization is a difficult thing to do it happens all the time. A trade that leads to another team winning the Stanley Cup will be looked at poorly no matter the partner.
As the trade deadline approaches it will be interesting to see if there are more reports of the past relationship of Conroy and Treliving getting in the way of a deal being made.
