A former goalie for the Toronto Maple Leafs has officially signed a new deal outside of the National Hockey League, signing a new contract in the ECHL, the third tier of North American pro hockey.
An important player for the Toronto Maple Leafs in their COVID-shortened season, this player now gets a new professional opportunity after a taste of the top level of pro Hockey.
Having spent months testing the free-agent market, former NHLer Kasimir Kaskisuo has signed a pro contract with the Norfolk Admirals of the ECHL.
Kaskisuo played a game for the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 2019-20 NHL season in a 6-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Kaskisuo was the emergency netminder for the Leafs in the NHL playoff bubble during the COVID-shortened season that allowed for teams to be emergency call-ups, Kaskisuo being one of two.
After not re-signing with the Leafs, Kaskisuo signed with the Nashville Predators and played a single game for the team.
Kaskisuo, a native of Finland, is a product of Jokerit's youth team. After being the third-choice netminder behind future NHLers Joonas Korpisalo and Kevin Lankinen, Kaskisuo moved to North America.
Afterwards, Kaskisuo played college hockey with Minnesota-Duluth, playing two seasons as one of the NCAA's top netminders before signing with the Leafs as a free agent in 2016.
Leaving North America at the end of the 2020-21 NHL season, Kaskisuo signed with Leksands in the Swedish Hockey League.
Leaving Leksands in 2023, Kaskisuo returned to North America and signed a PTO with the Laval Rocket, the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens.
Kaskisuo signed a contract with the Rocket and played in 13 games with the club.
Prior to this season, Kaskisuo signed a PTO in the NHL with the Boston Bruins. He was released a few days later.
As well as being a professional goalie, Kaskisuo has a popular YouTube channel with nearly 70k subscribers, documenting his life as a pro netminder.
