The Maple Leafs managed to secure Joseph Woll to a three-year contract earlier this week. With that done, they can start looking at who will complete the Leafs' goalie unit for the 2024-25 season.
It was already confirmed that they will let Ilya Samsonov sign with another team during free agency. They need another one, and here are those that General Manager Brad Treliving must absolutely avoid.
According to The Hockey Writers, the Leafs must not go after the following goalies on July 1: Kaapo Kahkonen, Kevin Lankinen, Eric Comrie, Laurent Brossoit, Antti Raanta, James Reimer, and Scott Wedgewood.
The Leafs management was clear at the end-of-season media availability: they want to make the team better. The players listed in the previous paragraph wouldn't be a real upgrade from Samsonov, Woll, and Jones.
If the team can learn one thing from their past playoff runs, it is that just because they have Auston Matthews and William Nylander, they can't afford to go cheap on a goaltender.
While Woll could be ready to fill the number-one role, the Leafs seem poised to add another goalie. With Linus Ullmark, Jacob Markstrom, and Darcy Kuemper already traded, that doesn't leave the Leafs many options, but interesting goalies like Juuse Saros or Cam Talbot are still available on the market.
Fans hope that Treliving will finally pull off a magic trick in Toronto as the Leafs hope to bounce back from yet another first-round playoff exit.
