With just over 90 hours remaining until the Trade Deadline, the Toronto Maple Leafs continue to assess their options when it comes to making an addition to their roster in hopes of making a deep run.
Top NHL insider Frank Seravalli has linked the Leafs to former Stanley Cup-winning forward Reilly Smith, who has been made a healthy scratch by the New York Rangers for Trade Deadline purposes this week.
After playing several years with the Golden Knights and winning the Stanley Cup with them in 2023 as an original misfit, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
He remained with the Penguins all of last year despite them not making the playoffs, and later made his way to the New York Rangers. However, the Rangers are on the bubble of the playoffs and have already made significant changes to their roster this year.
Smith has 29 points (10G, 19A) this year with the Rangers in 58 games played.
He could no doubt help the Maple Leafs as a defensively sound winger who is a reliable offensive contributor who could come at a very cheap cost with salary retention ($1.875M)
For his career, Smith has 223 goals and 319 assists in 898 games split with Vegas, Boston, Florida, Dallas, Pittsburgh, and the Rangers.
The Rangers have already made multiple trades this season, including sending former captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks, Kaapo Kakko to the Seattle Kraken, and Ryan Lindgren and Jimmy Vesey both to the Colorado Avalanche.
Not to mention the Rangers sent a ton of assets to Vancouver for J.T. Miller, so it's really unknown at this point which direction the team is going to go.
But now, it looks like Smith could be the next domino to fall, and could set off another chain reaction in the Big Apple.
