After months of speculation, we finally got an update on Nick Robertson, with the talented young forward inking a one-year extension with the Toronto Maple Leafs for the 2024/25 season. This comes just weeks after the Maple Leafs forward officially requested a trade from the team, with many fans feeling the extension put that request to bed for good.
Now, things have turned again, with top NHL Insider Frank Seravalli revealing that the new extension doesn't change anything for Robertson, as the belief around the league is that he still wants to be moved and will still likely be moved ahead of the new season.
With Max Pacioretty potentially on the way, as well as prospects Easton Cowan and Fraser Minten pushing for a spot on the team, the Maple Leafs have options, so after all the speculation, moving Robertson may be the best move after all.
At 22-years of age, it's clear that Robertson has a very bright future in the NHL if he can stay healthy, but he is of the belief that he should have a significant role right now, and that will ultimately lead to his departure from Toronto, whether it be this off-season or at the trade deadline. After tallying 14 goals and 27 points in 56 games of his first full NHL season, the potential for Robertson is there, and after all the patience Toronto have had with him, it wouldn't be surprising if their frustration led to a move this off-season, and given their desires to chase a Stanley Cup, they will look to net a significant veteran piece in return.
