Kade O'Rourke is expected to become the 10th player ever to receive CHL exceptional status — joining Connor McDavid, Connor Bedard and John Tavares.

One of the most promising players in the Ontario hockey circuit is poised for a major honor as defenseman Kade O'Rourke is expected to gain exceptional status to play in the Ontario Hockey League a year early.
O'Rourke, who plays in the Greater Toronto Hockey League, is widely expected to become the 10th player to gain exceptional status by the Canadian Hockey League.
If approved, and it is highly anticipated that he will, he'd join a list that includes Connor McDavid, Connor Bedard, and Leafs forward John Tavares among those.
Having been viewed as one of the top young players in the GTHL, momentum had been building since the end of 2025 that O'Rourke could be approved for exceptional status.
Not NHL draft eligible until 2029, O'Rourke is already building up hype after an impressive season as an underager in U16 hockey, with an OHL cup finals run only rising his stock.

Kade O'Rourke expected to be the next big defenseman in junior hockey

Born in Texas, the O'Rourke family has been in Ontario over the last few years, currently residing in the Toronto area where he's been playing his hockey.
If you're looking for Kade O'Rourke's GTHL stats, you won't find it just yet. The league doesn't release their stats publicly, with draft prospect stats only released with their draft guide.
At the OHL cup, O'Rourke had 10 points in 7 games for the Jr. Canadiens, the most points in the tournament by an underage defenseman as Toronto lost to Detroit-based team HoneyBaked.
Arguably the best defenseman out of the OHL since Matthew Schaefer, Having seen both at the same age, O'Rourke has outplayed the Islanders star, but Schaefer was a raw, younger birthday. Schaefer's development was a marathon rather than a sprint.
What makes O'Rourke so captivating is how dominant his game is while being one of the youngest players in the league. He's been a full 200-ft player with a reliable two-way game and elite skating.
At his current level, there isn't a flaw in O'Rourke's game.
The 2026 OHL Priority Selection doesn't have a consensus top prospect. The most popular choice among scouts having been Mississauga Senators forward Arjun Nanubhai.
Prep star forward Tanner Adams is another top prospect, as is O'Rourke's JRC teammate, Kash Kwajah. 6'7 forward Logan Prud'homme is a highly regarded prospect while defenseman Adrian Sgro and forward Drew Bate are two names with promise to dominate at the OHL level.
None were consensus top picks. If Kade O'Rourke is in this draft he's the likely top pick. The Oshawa Generals won the top pick earlier this week, their last first overall being John Tavares.

Just how talented is Kade O'Rourke as a player?

I spoke to one OHL scout who was not only convinced that O'Rourke would be a great player once he gets on an OHL ice, but that he could become an OHL #1 defenseman right away at just 15 years old.
At the NHL level, it's way, way too soon to say, but as a well-rounded, mature right-handed blueliner, O'Rourke has all the tools necessary to impact as a star defenseman at the NHL level if he continues his current pace.
It's a big comparison, but there are shades of Cale Makar in O'Rourke's game, but he's less of that mold than 2027 top prospect Landon DuPont, but none less talented than DuPont.
Another comparison for more at the OHL level could be a more dynamic, and more defensively responsible Zayne Parekh, the Flames first rounder.
The word 'generational' is a bit too strong, at least right now, but O'Rourke has the full package to be an NHL team's star defenseman, and potentially franchise superstar.

Other promising 2029 NHL Draft prospects of note

It might be too early to talk about who could be a top prospect in three years, but it was around this age that players like Connor Bedard and Macklin Celebrini were being talked about as future NHLers, it's bound to happen.
In 2029, there is much more talent making waves. In Ontario, two other names have high interest in Tyson Orr and Callum Brooks, both potential top prospects next OHL draft, along with Toronto Marlboro Jayden Challenger.
Out west, two names dueling for the top pick in the WHL Draft, Parker McMillan & Madden Daneault, are expected to go to the wire for who goes #1.
In Europe, English-born Slovak Max Melicherik has been gaining traction, and early comparisons to Juraj Slafkovsky.
He and Juho Nyberg have been the top 2029 eligible in the Finnish U18 league. In Switzerland, Lionel Dedial is playing at a PPG+ pace in the Swiss U21.
However, it's Kade O'Rourke right now getting attention, but outside of Ontario, some highly promising young talents have emerged to potentially make the 2029 NHL Draft a fun one.
