LA Kings vs. Flames Game Postponed Amid Devastating California Wildfires
Due to the California wildfires tearing through the state, the NHL has decided to officially postpone the Los Angeles Kings' game for safety reasons.
It's been a terrifying few days for residents of the State of California as wildfires have ravaged the Palisades area. While typically known for wildfires during the spring and summer months, it's not unheard of for winter months to bring some very scary scenarios.
Wildfire smoke and fire has often prohibited other sports leagues fromholding games, such as when the MLB and WNBA were forced to postpone games due to the conditions. There were even reports of smoke being detected inside the Barclay Center; home of the Brooklyn Nets.
But these fires have caused extensive damage, and forced the NHL to come to an immediate, albeit correct decision to postpone the Los Angeles Kings vs. Calgary Flames game on Wednesday night.
The NHL's Statement Regarding Los Angeles Kings' Postponement
The league officially released a statement as well:
"In light of the devastating effects of the wildfires in the Los Angeles area, tonight's game between the Los Angeles Kings and the Calgary Flames at Crypto.com Arena, NHL Game No. 653, has been postponed.
The thoughts of the entire NHL family are with the Kings, hockey fans, and the people of Los Angeles during this difficult time.
A makeup date will be announced as soon as it can be confirmed."
The NHL is also going to be monitoring the current situation in order to determine if further games are going to be postponed.
The Los Angeles Kings also released a statement for fans regarding the game:
"Tonight's game against Calgary has been postponed.
Our hearts are with the entire Los Angeles community. We appreciate the hard working First Responders who are diligently working to contain the fire and protect our community.
We appreciate the League's support in keeping our fans, staff, and players safe."
The Kings also reassured fans that tickets for the postponed game are still valid for the makeup date, and that if there are any issues the team will work to make sure they are remedied.
Several other leagues also cancelled various games. NCAA Women's Basketball game between Pepperdine and Portland West was postponed due to the location and restricted access currently at Pepperdine.
It's a truly tragic situation out in California, and we here at Hockey Patrol would like to send our best to any impacted by the wildfires.
