After some great regular season success in Toronto, John Tavares' time with the team may be coming to an end, as the team have won just one playoff series during his tenure as captain. After joining the Leafs on a seven-year deal back in 2018, his contract is now coming up, with just one more season to prove that he and this team can win together with this group.
Whether that happens or not, it's clear that the home town kid wants to remain a Maple Leaf, with the team needing to make a key decision on his future sometime soon. Now, Jon Steitzer of The Leafs Nation has projected Tavares' new deal, and it's safe to say that fans will have mixed reactions about No. 91's future in Toronto.
According to Steitzer, Tavares' new deal could look similar to that of Anze Kopitar in Los Angeles, who has a two-year deal that comes in at $7 million AAV, but believes if he wants to remain a Maple Leaf, it will need to come in at under $5 million per season.
All in all, it appears as though the Maple Leafs will wait out Tavares until free agency and won't extend him before hand, and more likely than not, their Stanley Cup Playoff success in the upcoming season could determine whether he stays or whether he goes.
