Injured a second time this year, Auston Matthews has had many questions surrounding what the extent of his injury is and how long the captain may be on the shelf again; already missing nine games earlier this season.
Though there's no official word yet on Matthews' return, the captain made a stunning return to the ice in practice on Monday, participating fully and having no restrictions on him. The news was relayed by NHL Insider Dave McCarthy on X.
It's a positive sign that could see Matthews returning as early as Thursday against the Islanders however the jury is still out on when he's expected back.
Although his status is still a question mark, it's a relief for his teammates and fans that he's seemingly and hopefully over what's ailing him.
The reason this feels so monumental is because Matthews was expected to be out until at least the first week of 2025, and there was even talks about potentially shutting him down for the foreseeable future.
But his return not only to the ice in general but as a full participant is a big step towards a healthy and potentially one again dominant Matthews. The Leafs didn't want to overwork their captain though, as he left the practice early after putting in a full effort.
With only 11 goals and 23 points this season, he has not been anywhere near the player fans expect and his injury clearly had a lot to do with it. Fans are ecstatic too about his return.
But if he can get over that roadblock of whatever injury is ailing him, the Maple Leafs are going to be as dangerous as ever, especially if Mitch Marner and company can keep the torrid pace they're on.
While there's no official word on Matthews heading back to the lineup, it's at least known he will not suit up for the team against New York on Tuesday.
But his appearances on the ice in recent days give hope that not only can he come back in a reasonable amount of time, but that he's done with this injury for good.
