Auston Matthews' contract doesn't end until next summer, but Brad Treliving is already on the case. He wants to extend his star player for the long haul.
However, Matthews could decide to play elsewhere if the Leafs don't offer him what he wants.
With the hiring of Shane Doan, Matthews' favorite player growing up, Treliving has already started off on the right foot.
But something else could entice Matthews to sign long-term with the Leafs.
In a recent radio interview, Nick Kypreos and Justin Bourne talked about Matthews and what could help him decide to remain in Toronto.
A major incentive came up.
Auston Matthews would probably love to be the team's captain. With Tavares' contract scheduled to end in two seasons, it's a real possibility to see Auston Matthews being named captain if he stays.
There's another question to be answered: does he have what it takes to be captain? His attitude hasn't always been exemplary, and last season left many fans unsatisfied.
Do you think Auston Matthews would be a good captain?
