UPDATE: (2/26/26, 2:00p.m.) Sonny Milano has cleared waivers according to Elliotte Friedman.

The Washington Capitals placed Sonny Milano on waivers and with a 2PM deadline on Thursday, will the Maple Leafs make a move for the veteran forward?
With the NHL back in the swing of things, that means that teams are getting their rosters prepared for the playoff push ahead, and that means that some players are going to be on the outs.
Sonny Milano is one of those players, as the Washington Capitals placed him on waivers Wednesday afternoon as the team looks to move on from the veteran forward.
He's played sparingly this season and much like Jeff Skinner in San Jose; the Capitals are wanting a change of scenery.
But that begs the question: Should the Maple Leafs take a stab at signing him?

Maple Leafs should sign Sonny Milano as cheap winger if they sell

Toronto has until 2 PM on Thursday to make a claim for him, and if the team is thinking about selling (as they absolutely should) they need some really cheap NHL-ready players to fill the gaps for the rest of the year.
Milano would be a perfect addition on the cheap, as he could sign for league minimum or a bit higher and use this as an audition for a bigger deal this summer.
Milano, 29, has eight points in 31 games this season for the Capitals, but is more than capable of scoring. In 344 games he has 145 points (66 goals, 79 assists) and has four seasons with double-digit goals.
His underlying numbers are pretty good and he's had historically good possession numbers, and he's not too bad defensively. If Toronto is looking for a cheaper defensive forward, then Milano is a good one.
Given that the Maple Leafs don't have much money to work with and are likely going to need some bodies to fill space, then bringing in Milano would be a cost-effective option that could come to prove highly beneficial if they become sellers.
And the way things are looking, they probably should.
