A number of regulars were not on the ice for the Toronto Maple Leafs during their practice session on Friday, including defenseman Jake McCabe and forwards Nick Robertson and Calle Jarnkrok. After practice, the club announced Jake McCabe is out with an upper-body injury, and Calle Jarnkork is day-to-day with a lower-body ailment. One that Leafs fans won't like to hear is that Nick Robertson has also suffered an injury. He is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
It feels like Calle Jarnkrok has been dealing with a couple of little injuries in the last little while. His upper and lower-body issues have kept him from any kind of preseason action to date. Based on the way he has been lately, he may very well be a game-time decision in the preseason finale upcoming against the Red Wings. The club may take the safe route and simply ensure he is good to go when Opening Night against the Canadiens rolls around. It appears Jake McCabe is nursing some sort of upper-body injury. There's no word on the severity, but it's far from the most welcome news with Saturday's preseason tilt with the Red Wings on tap. Nothing yet on his status for that one, but it would probably be prudent to play it cautious to make sure he's a full go for Wednesday's Opening Night matchup with Montreal.
On Wednesday's Real Kyper and Bourne Show, NHL insider Nick Kypreos revealed that he believes the Toronto Maple Leafs are close to an extension with defenseman Jake McCabe, perhaps as early as before October 9, 2024, when the regular season gets underway. Last week, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts podcast that the Leafs and McCabe had been talking about a new deal. It would seem the negotiations are going quite well, and a deal is near.
Others not on the ice included Anthony Stolarz, Easton Cowan, and Nikita Grebenkin, but those three are not expected to be suffering from an injury. The Leafs had the following lines in practice today:
The Leafs will wrap up the pre-season schedule on Saturday against the Detroit Red Wings and then will head to Wednesday's regular-season opener against the Montreal Canadiens.
