The Toronto Maple Leafs were hoping to bring back Max Domi this summer and reports indicated he wanted to be back. Both Max Domi and Tyler Bertuzzi were expected to discuss new contracts with the team.
However, a new report from Maple Leafs reporter Steve Simmons says that Max Domi might want to find a new agent if he wants to truly stick around.
Max Domi at 29 years old is right at the turning point for an NHL player. Heading into their 30s players usually start to tail off in production. This means the Maple Leafs might want to sign a short-term deal but this would drive up the salary cap hit. With Max Domi making just around 3 million dollars last year he likely will want a big pay bump.
As Brad Treliving and the Toronto Maple Leafs head into the offseason the contract of Max Domi will be one of the biggest decisions they need to make. His chemistry with new head coach Craig Berube could be the pivotal factor in whether or not a deal gets done.
