Last night Max Domi had the opportunity to play on the Leafs Top line, and he did not disappoint, performing well enough for this major development to unfold.

Toronto Maple Leafs' new fan-favourite player Max Domi has taken a little time to find his groove with the Leafs. After a slow start to the season, Max Domi has found his game. He has not put the puck in the net as much as many fans had hoped, however, he has made that deficit up in his ability to facilitate scoring chances.

Domi now is top of the league in 5-on-5 assists, something that flies under the radar for the new Leaf. During last night's game when he was given the opportunity to play on the Leafs' top line with Auston Matthews and Tyler Bertuzzi, he made the most of it, recording 4 assists.

Everyone in the NHL with more 5v5 assists than Max Domi:

Connor McDavid
 Nathan Mackinnon
Nikita Kucherov
Leon Draisaitl
Tim Stutzle
Quinn Hughes

That's the list.

It's not just the fact that he has a ton of 5-on-5 assists that is so impressive, either. Max Domi doesn't get as many minutes as a lot of the guys on the list above, meaning that his per-minute assist total is even more impressive. Only Connor McDavid is ahead of him when you break the production down by the minute.

Here's a list of players with more 5v5 assists per minute than Max Domi this season:

Connor McDavid

Max Domi also gives the Leafs an element of grit that they didn't have from top-scoring players in the past. He isn't afraid to mix it up with anyone, which is great for the playoffs when the Leafs enforcers like Ryan Reaves likely won't be on the ice enough to make their presence known. Max Domi, who can play up and down the lineup, will be a great piece to help protect the Leafs stars like Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner while being able to produce points when it matters.

We will see if Sheldon Keefe decides to increase Max Domi's playing time based on his recent success. With Mitch Marner out for the time being, Max Domi could be the saving grace to allow him more time to recover from his troubling ankle injury.
