This news comes courtesy of Leafs reporter Nick Kypreos. Furthermore, Kypreos also revealed that DeBrusk may be interested in joining the Leafs as well. Given the fact that both sides appear to be interested, this move seems rather likely.
It is not clear whether or not the Bruins are trying to re-sign DeBrusk. DeBrusk revealed himself that the Bruins have not yet reached out about a contract extension. The team should have enough cap space to make such a move happen as they have 21 million dollars in cap space with just six roster spots to fill.
Goaltender Jeremy Swayman is their biggest-name RFA who needs an extension this summer. That being said, one might have expected to team to re-sign Jake DeBrusk at this point if they were interested, considering the fact that they will lose his rights on July 1st. The Leafs may have extra incentive to sign the forward considering how effective he has been against them in the playoffs.
DeBrusk had 19 goals and 40 points for the Bruins in the regular season this year. He followed that up with 5 goals and 11 points in 13 playoff games, by far the best playoffs performance of his career on a points-per-game basis.
Many of those points came against the Leafs as the bruins beat them in the first round once again. The 27-year-old has played in 465 career NHL games, all with the Boston Bruins. He has 138 career goals and 266 career points to show for it.
