Nick Kypreos Predicts Maple Leafs Top Prospect Will Be Traded by Next Week
NHL analyst Nick Kypreos reiterated his belief that either Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan are going to be traded as the trade deadline is under a week away.
A lot of talk around whether or not Brad Treliving is going to trade away either Fraser Minten or Easton Cowan as part of a trade package for a player such as Brayden Schenn or Brock Nelson, as no doubt will their respective teams be looking to squeeze as many assets out of a deal as possible.
There's a lot of concerns from fans about the team getting rid of some exciting prospects, but for Maple Leafs analyst Nick Kypreos, he's staunch in his belief that one of them is gone:
I think there's a lot left to do. But we've still got some depth to be picked up on the blue line, would they in a perfect world like to replace [Conor] Timmins with [Luke] Schenn?
Luke's built up some stock over the years, He's not going to be cheap. You want to put the brothers here, they're not going to be cheap. You gotta make that decision on what you wanna move out.
They don't have their first round pick this year, I don't think it scares teams but they can float around their 2026 first round pick. Teams will want the Leafs first round for next year.
So with them not having a pick this year, I expect Minten or Cowan to be gone pretty much.
Is Kypreos on the right track? Or is Toronto going to avoid making a risky gamble?
Toronto's Gambling Their Future Is A Necessary Evil

It's going to sting when the Maple Leafs trade either of their top prospects, but it's something winning teams do and Toronto hasn't been one of those in a long time.
Adding the Schenn Brothers would give Toronto a leg up on the competition however giving away Cowan and some premium picks for regressing veterans is a very risky proposition.
Luke is going to be a third-pairing defender, and Schenn is likely to patrol the 3C position, but overpaying that much when other 3C options are available and for cheaper; it's a bit egregious to spend that much.
There's a lot to be said if Toronto gives up the farm and exits the first round again. But if Brad Treliving wants to give his team the best chance they've had in over 30 years; he's gotta make the toughest call yet.
