The devastation of the California wildfires have been unsettling to say the least. Among the carnage and destruction, a community lays in ruins while firefighters and First Responders work tirelessly through horrid conditions and brutal winds in order to try and contain the worst natural disaster in State history.
It's affected hundreds of thousands, caused professional sports leagues to cancel and postpone games due to safety concerns, and many celebrities and athletes are directly affected one way or the other.
The Toronto Maple Leafs have one such player, as Nick Robertson was born in Arcadia, California; a stone's throw from Pasadena and mere miles away from the natural disaster, and recently shared his family's harrowing experience.
Although he spent the majority of his life in Toronto and Michigan in order to play professional hockey, the Robertson's were actually born in sunny California in the city of Arcadia, a city of roughly 55,000 residents and a short trip up I-210 from Pasadena.
Speaking on the horrific disaster currently unfolding, Robertson revealed his family was directly affected and needed evacuation although thankfully, they avoided some serious catastrophes.
That is absolutely terrifying, especially being across the continent in another city trying to focus on doing your job. Thankfully the home isn't affected and everyone got out safely, but the inherent risks and danger that were ever-present still must have made Robertson riddled with anxiety.
It shows that although hockey is the predominant factor in his life, Robertson is still willing to put things aside for the bigger cause.
It's coincidental that he plays against Dallas on Tuesday; where his brother plays. The two are able to come together in the same spot and figure out the next best moves for their family.
Robertson this season has seven goals and four assists, though it wouldn't be unexpected to see him or his brother struggle tonight given the circumstances.
Thankfully, the Robertson family avoided any terrible tragedies, and are able to keep themselves and their home safe.
We here at Hockey Patrol would like to send our well wishes to those affected by the disaster and a huge thank you to all First Responders, firefighters, and volunteers helping to contain this natural disaster.
