It's been less than a stellar start for the Toronto Maple Leafs at least on the injury front. Joseph Woll's been hurt since the beginning of the year, they have Jani Hakanpaa and Connor Dewar on the shelf recovering, and have already dealt with injuries to Auston Matthews, John Tavares, and William Nylander.
It's the latter two who have missed time recently, with Tavares having to sit out Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Penguins due to an unspecified illness, and also missed two more practices. Earlier today it was reported that William Nylander was absent from practice as well while also dealing with an illness. Per TSN's Mark Masters, there's a virus ravaging the Maple Leafs locker room right now:
Head coach Craig Berube was his typical stern and matter-of-fact self when talking about the locker room sickness:
It's good that Tavares has returned to practice even if he wasn't at 100% energy, as Toronto can't afford any setbacks or long-term injuries, especially at the start of the season where it's imperative to build chemistry and momentum going into the latter part of the year. It's unknown how many other players are affected, but let's hope it's nothing too serious or anything that could lead to worse health problems down the line.
Toronto will take a hopefully healthy team into Wednesday's game when they take on the Los Angeles Kings at the Scotiabank Arena starting at 7:30 PM ET.
