According to the site NHL trade rumors, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Utah Hockey Club could be interested in swapping young forwards Nick Robertson and Josh Doan.
The move would be significant as Doan is technically playing for the same franchise his father spent his entire career with. He is considered to be a lower ceiling player than Robertson, who still has top-six potential, but would an upgrade be worth giving up a player with family ties to the team?
One thing we know for sure, is that Nick Robertson is not happy in his current situation with the Leafs. Reports emerged this summer that he has requested a trade from the team, but nothing has materialized at this point.
The 22-year-old has appeared in 87 career games with the Leafs, 56 of which came last season. He had 14 goals and 27 points in his first mostly full season at the NHL level, a strong indication of what he is capable of.
He has slowly appeared in more NHL games in each of the last four seasons, so we can expect that trend to continue next year where hopefully he will play the full 82-game season.
Perhaps he will get traded mid-season or even next summer if his situation with the team does not change. Who knows, maybe he'll even get moved to Utah.
Doan on the other hand, has only played 11 career NHL games, all of which came last season. He did have 9 points in those games, including 5 goals, but that level of production is not expected from him going forward.
He had 26 goals and 46 points in 62 games at the AHL level with the Tucson roadrunners. Like Robertson, he was as a second round draft pick, going 37th overall to the Coyotes in 2021.
